Earpads: materials, feel, and when to replace

Earpads: materials, feel, and when to replace

Liner notes 3 min read

An earpad is not padding. It is the small room your driver plays into: it sets the distance from driver to ear, seals the chamber or leaks it, and either absorbs sound or bounces it back. Change the pad and you change the bass, the isolation, and how the headphone feels an hour in. Worn pads are why a good headphone slowly starts sounding wrong, and a pad swap is the cheapest real modification you can make to one you like.

Why pads change the sound

Three mechanisms. Seal: a pad that grips your head keeps bass in; a leaky one lets it escape. Depth: a thicker pad moves the driver away from your ear, which usually softens treble slightly and opens the image a little. Surface: leather reflects, fabric absorbs, so the same headphone reads warmer and more isolated in leather than in velour. None of this is subtle. Put sealed leather pads on a Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO and you will hear more bass than the day it left the box.

The Dekoni menu, in plain terms

  • Choice Leather — synthetic leather. Solid seal, more bass, more isolation, easy to wipe clean. Runs warm on the ears in summer.
  • Choice Suede — brushed synthetic face that breathes better than leather. A touch less seal, so a touch less bass. The long-session comfort pick.
  • Elite Velour — woven fabric, cool on the skin, closest in character to Beyerdynamic's own velour. Lets a little sound through in both directions.
  • Elite Sheepskin — real leather. The firmest seal, the most isolation, the most bass, and the top of the price list.
  • Fenestrated Sheepskin — sheepskin with small perforations on the inner walls. The holes vent the chamber so bass does not pile up; you keep the leather feel and land closer to the stock tuning.
  • Elite Hybrid — sheepskin outside, velour where it touches your skin, fenestrated inner wall. The compromise pad, and often the sensible answer.
  • Elite Gel — a cooling gel layer under the surface for people whose ears overheat. We stock it for the Beyerdynamic DT series and the ATH-M50X.

Dekoni cuts every material per model, not one-size. Our shelf covers the platforms our headphones come from: DT 770 / 880 / 990, DT 700 / 900 Pro X, HD 600 / 650 / 6XX / 58X, HD 25 and ATH-M50X / MDR-7506, plus Focal, HiFiMan, Audeze, Meze, Fostex, AKG and Sony platforms in the Earpads department. Not every material exists for every platform — the product page lists what is made for yours.

Genuine or Dekoni

The rule is short. Genuine pads put the headphone back to the day it left the factory: same tuning, same feel, no surprises. Dekoni pads change it — usually thicker, usually better sealed, always a shift in balance along with the comfort. Both are legitimate answers to different questions.

For factory restoration we stock the real parts: EDT 770 VB velour and EDT 770 SG leather for the DT 770, EDT 990 V velour for the DT 990, genuine Sennheiser 050635 pads for the HD 600 family, the HD 280 PRO cushion and headband set, and Austrian Audio's own Hi-X65 cushion kit — that one fits the Hi-X65 specifically.

Who should not buy aftermarket pads

Anyone who mixes on their headphones. If you have spent two years learning exactly where the bass sits on your DT 770 or HD 600, a Dekoni swap moves that reference and your next mixes will drift. Buy the genuine part and keep your calibration. The same goes for anyone hoping pads will fix a headphone they dislike: pads adjust, they do not transform. Sheepskin will blunt a DT 990's treble a little; it will not turn it into a different headphone. If the tuning is the problem, change the headphone, not the pads.

The 18-month sweat rule

Pads are consumables. Sweat and skin oil soak in, foam collapses, synthetic leather stiffens and flakes. With daily use, plan on new pads roughly every 18 months. Replace sooner if the foam no longer springs back, the surface sheds black flakes, your ears touch the driver grille, or the bass has gone thin — that last one is the seal failing, not your memory. A quick pass with cleaning wipes after sweaty sessions stretches the interval; nothing extends it forever.

If you are not sure which platform your model belongs to, send us the exact model name before ordering. Pad fits are precise, and we would rather check than have you repack a parcel.
