The original AstroLab: the V Collection instruments running in hardware, with a browsing flow built for the stage. Turn the wheel, see the patch on the colour screen, play. The laptop stays home, and nothing crashes mid-set.

It suits the player who has spent years with Analog Lab in a DAW and wants those exact sounds on stage without the interface-and-laptop tangle. Five octaves with aftertouch cover two-handed parts properly.

Sound design still lives in Analog Lab on the computer; the AstroLab is the performance end. If you never touch the software, the factory library is broad enough to gig from day one.

Our take
The honest middle of the three: the 37 is cramped for two hands and the 88 is heavy for the sounds most people play on it. Sixty-one aftertouch keys is where this instrument makes the most sense.
