The diplomatic Beyerdynamic: semi-open, sitting tonally between the closed 770's punch and the open 990's air. Arguably the most neutral of the classic trio, which is why mastering rooms keep choosing it over both.

250 Ω — plan on a real headphone amp or a proper interface, not a laptop jack. Studio trim brings the firmer clamp and the 3 m coiled cable that stays out of your chair wheels. Replaceable everything, as always with this family.

Our take

If we could keep one classic Beyerdynamic for judging mixes, this is it — the 770 isolates and the 990 excites, but the 880 tells the truth. It only works amped; from a phone it is a polite shrug.
