The AKG K701, K702, K712, K7XX (the Drop collaboration), and K518 share a common ear cup geometry — one of the more familiar platforms in open-back headphone history. The K701 and K702 have defined reference-monitor sound for decades: wide soundstage, detailed high end, and a bass response that some find lean and others find accurate. The K7XX is the same platform tuned with more low-end weight. All share the same Dekoni pad options. Available materials Elite Velour: High-grade velour, memory foam fill. The acoustically neutral choice for this platform. The K701's wide, airy character depends partly on velour-style pads; replacing worn stock velour with a higher-grade version preserves the tuning while improving durability. Better pressure distribution as well -- the K701's clamping force is not light. Elite Sheepskin: Real sheepskin, solid face. The K701's lean low end gets noticeably warmer with sheepskin sealing the cup. Some listeners consider this an improvement; those who chose the K701 for its analytical character may not. The K7XX, which already has more bass weight, takes sheepskin less well. Elite Fenestrated Sheepskin: Perforated sheepskin. A reasonable compromise for the K701 specifically: leather construction and some low-end reinforcement without fully sealing the cup and losing the open character. For listeners who want more warmth but less than solid sheepskin provides. Elite Hybrid: Velour face, leather surrounds. Acoustic character close to velour with better thermal management. The K701 series can run warm during long listening sessions; hybrid pads address this without tuning compromise. Drop-in fit. Genuine Dekoni pads,
Our take
Dekoni's material names, decoded: Choice is the value line, Elite the premium one. Sheepskin seals tightest and lifts bass slightly; Fenestrated (perforated) sheepskin opens the sound back up; Velour breathes best for long sessions; Hybrid mixes sheepskin outer, fenestrated inner, velour face; Gel actively cools. If you are torn between two, velour for comfort, sheepskin for isolation.
