Edifier's retro portable: a single battery-powered cabinet with the same mid-century face as the D12, shrunk to carry-around size. Bluetooth from the phone, charge it, take it to the balcony, the summerhouse, the office kitchen.

It fills the gap between pocket speakers and shelf systems — proper cabinet walls and a metal-look grille rather than a rubber puck, so voices and acoustic music keep their manners outdoors and in.

If it will spend its life on one shelf and never move, the mains-powered D12 gives you more cabinet for similar money. The MP230's price buys the battery and the freedom.

Our take

The one we'd take to a summerhouse — it looks like furniture, not equipment. Buy the D12 instead if it's never actually leaving the shelf.
