The smallest wooden box in Edifier's bookshelf line: a powered pair with Bluetooth and two RCA line inputs, so the PC and the TV stay plugged in while the phone streams over the top.

A 4-inch bass driver a side gives it more body than any plastic desktop speaker; keep expectations shelf-sized and it delivers. Kitchen, dorm room, bedside — the places a first system actually lives.

No remote and no digital inputs; for those, step up to the R1280DB. And if a turntable is the source, remember these inputs are line-level — the deck needs its own phono stage.

Our take

The honest starter box. Its near-twin the R1080BT adds tone knobs, and the R1280DB adds remote and optical and is the better long-term buy — but nothing below this deserves the word hi-fi.
