The multimedia one: a powered wooden pair with two 6.35 mm microphone inputs on top of Bluetooth and line-in. Plug a mic in and it becomes a small PA for a classroom, a rehearsal corner or a karaoke evening.

As a music speaker it is a standard 42 W Edifier bookshelf pair — warm, forgiving, shelf-friendly — and the mic inputs mix straight in over whatever is playing.

Sold as a pair. Buy it for the microphones; if you will never plug one in, the R1280DB is the better pure-music spend.

Our take
The only R-series with mic inputs, and that is the entire reason to buy it — as a plain music box the R1280DB beats it. Handy fact: almost nothing else this small hosts two mics at once.
