One of the cheapest ways to stop listening through laptop speakers and still call it a system: a wired powered pair with two RCA line inputs, 4-inch bass drivers and 24 W between them.

No Bluetooth, no remote, no app — it does exactly one thing and keeps doing it. Two inputs mean the PC and a CD player or TV can stay connected at once.

Sold as a pair. If a phone is the main source in your house, take the R990BT or R1010BT instead and get Bluetooth done properly.

Our take
Our pick for a first desk system bought with summer-job money. The R1100 adds a little muscle and Bluetooth models add convenience; nothing at this level adds honesty.
