The utilitarian ANC over-ear: wireless with active noise cancelling, a built-in microphone, and a wired option for flat batteries and seat-back screens. Ivory or Black.

It is the least expensive way onto our noise-cancelling shelf with full-size cups, and the buying case is plain: commuting, study halls, open offices — hours of background-hum removal with over-ear comfort instead of things in your ears.

What it is not: a fashion object or a monitor. The ES850NB is the same brief in nicer materials, and the studio wall handles actual audio work. As a daily tool that lives in a backpack, this is the sensible answer.

Our take

The budget pick of Edifier's two ANC over-ears — same brief as the ES850NB in plainer clothes. If it's for your own bag, save the difference; if it's a gift, the ES850NB unwraps better.
