The desk unit for the sensible half of the planar wall: DAC and headphone amp in one box, R2R conversion, USB and coax inputs, network streaming built in. Outputs run from 6.35 mm to 4-pin XLR.

Its job is to end amplifier shopping for HE400se, Sundara and Edition XS owners — plug in, forget the subject. It will drive more ambitious headphones politely, but the EF500 and EF600 exist for that.

If you only run easy dynamic headphones, it's more amp than you need; put the difference into the headphones instead.

Our take
The EF most desks actually need — streaming input, power that covers HE400se through Edition XS with margin. Go EF500 only if balanced cables or Arya-class headphones are in the plan.
