The SM58's harder-working sibling: a supercardioid dynamic for live vocals with hotter output, a more present top end and a tighter pickup pattern. The hardened steel grille takes the same abuse the 58 is famous for surviving.

It suits loud stages. The supercardioid pattern rejects more of the wedges and backline than the 58's cardioid, so monitors can be pushed further before feedback, and the brighter voicing cuts through a dense mix without EQ.

One habit to learn: supercardioid picks up a little from directly behind, so keep the wedge slightly off-axis rather than dead behind the mic.

Our take

Louder stage, brighter voice: Beta 58A. Rougher handling and a tech crew that knows exactly what to expect: SM58. The 58 is the safer venue buy; the Beta is the one singers come back thanking us for.
