Sixteen pads, sixteen encoders and a 16-step sequencer in a footprint the size of a paperback. It works as a pad controller over USB and MIDI, then turns around and drives a modular over CV/gate — still the cheapest way to get analog gear moving from pads.

The job it does best: beat sketching and bassline sequencing on a small desk. Program a step pattern, tweak it live from the encoders, send it to hardware or a DAW.

Know its limits — the sequencer runs one monophonic pattern at a time, sixteen steps long. When your ideas need drums and melody sequenced together, that is what the BeatStep Pro is for.

Our take
For 3.5 mm CV desks it's still the value pick a decade on. Nobody sells a BeatStep because they stopped liking it — they sell it because they outgrew it, so if you already know you'll want drums and melody at once, go straight to the Pro.
