The M 88 is Beyerdynamic's charismatic all-rounder: a hypercardioid moving-coil dynamic that has spent decades on lead vocals and, in its spare time, inside kick drums. Dense low end, present midrange, and a tight pattern that keeps loud stages at bay.

It suits vocalists with power — the mic flatters proximity rather than punishing it — and engineers who want one serious dynamic to cover voice, kick, bass cab and brass without apology.

Hypercardioid means you aim it deliberately and keep wedges off-axis. Beyond that there is nothing to configure: no phantom, no switches, just a design that has been right since the sixties.

Our take
If the podcast-famous dynamics feel sterile to you, this is the one with a personality — Phil Collins sang on one for years, and it still moonlights on kick drums. One mic, one stand, half a studio covered.
