Electrostatic drivers move a diaphragm thinner than anything a magnet assembly can push, and the result is a specific kind of speed and low-level texture — voices, strings and room acoustics rendered with almost no apparent effort. Listeners who live on acoustic and vocal material are the natural audience.

Know before buying: the headphone runs only from an electrostatic energiser — never from a normal headphone amp — which is exactly why the amp is in the box. Bass has finesse rather than planar slam, and the set is open-back, quiet-room hardware.

Our take
Different from the big planars, not better: less weight and slam, more speed and air. On voices, strings and small ensembles it can embarrass everything else on this shelf; for electronic low end, take the HE1000se instead.
