The instrument workhorse. Snare, guitar cabs, brass, percussion: for fifty years the default answer, and the mic every engineer's muscle memory is calibrated to. Same capsule idea as the SM58 without the ball grille, which is why the pair covers a whole stage between them.

Dynamic and nearly unkillable, it takes drum hits and cab volume that would embarrass condensers, and its presence lift flatters exactly the sources it is famous for.

Bring an XLR cable and a stand. For podium or speech duty, add the A2WS windscreen — hard consonants pop on the bare grille.

Our take
If the mic locker holds exactly one mic, this is the one — it does a fair job of everything and a famous job of snare and cabs. Cab-only recordists should read the e 906 page before deciding.
