    A stereo receiver that does the classic job and nothing trendy: MM phono input for a turntable, Bluetooth for the phone, FM radio, A/B speaker switching, a headphone jack, and honest bass and treble knobs. 100 W per channel runs any sensible passive bookshelf or floorstander.

    The phono input matters: it is MM only. Both our Sony decks work here directly — switch their internal stage off and let the receiver do the work, or leave it on and use a line input. A low-output MC cartridge would need a separate MC stage; this has none.

    What it lacks is the point: no HDMI, no apps, no network — a two-channel amplifier with a tuner, which is why it will still be working in fifteen years.

    Our take
    The spine of a sensible first vinyl system: LX5BT into the phono input, passive speakers of your choosing, our Viablue SC-4 by the metre between them. The headphone jack handles an easy load like the HD 599 without complaint.
