The weird little synth that earned its cult. Digital oscillator engines run from wavetable through speech to physical modelling, then feed a real analog filter — a pairing that keeps the strange sounds warm. Four-voice paraphony, a mod matrix, and a sequencer with randomisation baked in mean the happy accidents arrive on schedule.

The flat capacitive keyboard divides people: no moving keys, but polyphonic aftertouch — rare on any synth, let alone at this price. Treat it as a new instrument rather than a worse piano and it starts paying out.

CV/gate and MIDI make it a good citizen in a bigger rig. If a synth should surprise you at least once per session, this is the one on our shelf that does.

Our take
The MiniFreak is the better instrument — real keys, more voices, effects — but the MicroFreak is the better troublemaker, and troublemaking is what Freaks are for. Add the gooseneck mic and the vocoder firmware turns it into the Vocoder Edition for pocket money.
