The gooseneck vocoder mic on its own — the same electret Arturia fits to the Vocoder Edition, sold separately so a standard MicroFreak can catch up. Update to the vocoder-ready firmware, mount the mic, and the 16-band vocoder engine opens up: your voice as modulator, any oscillator engine as carrier.
Robot choirs and talkbox lines are the obvious tricks; the quieter uses — whispered textures, rhythmic speech through the sequencer — are where it stays interesting.
It's built to fit the MicroFreak and nothing else. As a general-purpose microphone it is not trying, and shouldn't be judged as one.
Our take
The cheapest meaningful upgrade in the Arturia catalogue — a whole synthesis engine unlocked for the price of a takeaway dinner. If you own a MicroFreak, this is the obvious next purchase.
