An active dynamic for instruments: moving-coil toughness with a powered output stage behind it, which buys the top-end reach and consistent level you'd normally step up to a condenser for. Cardioid, with the swivel joint built in, so it aims at a cab or a snare without a forest of clamps.

Guitar and bass cabs, snare, brass — sources that are loud, close and unkind to fragile microphones.

The one thing to know: active means it needs 48 V phantom power, which is unusual for a dynamic. Forget to switch it on and the mic stays silent.

Our take
Against the Sennheiser e 906 on the same shelf: the e 906 is the proven fire-and-forget cab mic, while the OD5's active stage pulls more detail off the top. Cabs only, take the e 906; cabs plus snare and horns, take the OD5.
