Eight more Smartgain preamps down an ADAT light-pipe. Connect it to an EVO 16 — or any interface with optical I/O — and your channel count grows by eight, with conversion running in both directions so the outputs are useful too.

It exists for the day your sessions outgrow the interface: drum kits, full bands, a wall of guitar amps. Smartgain still sets all eight levels in one pass, and the desktop case racks up when the studio gets serious.

On its own it records nothing: this is an expander, and it needs an ADAT-equipped interface on the other end of the light-pipe.

Our take
Of the two eight-channel expanders on our shelf, this is the affordable one — the ASP800 charges for its Retro colour. The EVO 16 is the natural partner, but an iD14 owner gets the same eight channels through the same cable.
