A single active subwoofer — one cabinet, 70 W, a 20 cm driver — for adding the bottom octave to a bookshelf pair that can't produce it alone.

The natural partners are speakers with a dedicated subwoofer output: Edifier's own R1700BTS or R1280DBS connect with one cable and you're done.

Check your speakers before buying. No subwoofer output means you'll need a source that can feed the sub separately, and the convenience evaporates. And to be plain: this is one subwoofer, not a pair of speakers.

Our take
The single best upgrade for an R1700BTS that lives in a real room — small satellites plus this beats one bigger pair at similar total money for films and electronic music. Skip it if your speakers lack a sub output.
