The MD 421 has been the tom and broadcast mic since the sixties. The Kompakt keeps that capsule and tuning in a shorter housing with a normal XLR exit — the full-size 421's slide-on clip is the most cursed-at accessory in drum miking, and this one sidesteps it entirely. The drum clamp comes in the box.

On toms it is still the reference. It also earns its keep on guitar and bass cabs, and reads a speech voice with that dry broadcast weight.

Dynamic, so no phantom power needed. Buy one per tom and stop thinking about tom mics.

Our take
The e 604 clips on and does honest tom work for a lot less — but when the tom sound is the point, this is the mic the e 604 is imitating. Kompakt over full-size 421 for drums every time: same sound, none of the clip grief.
