The spoken-word standard: podcasts, radio, streaming — and a longer rock-vocal résumé than most singers. Cardioid dynamic with a big smooth capsule, built-in yoke, internal shock isolation and effective pop protection, so it forgives close, loud and sideways technique.

The one demand it makes is gain. Output is very low; it wants 60 dB or more of clean preamp, and budget interfaces run out of breath before that. Plan the preamp before the mic — or see the SM7dB, which builds one in.

Fed properly, it delivers the smoothest close-talk sound in the shop, with room noise politely ignored.

Our take
An SM7B into a weak preamp sounds worse than an MV7X into the same preamp. Budget for gain — an iD44 or a dedicated preamp — or buy the SM7dB and stop thinking about it.
