The KeyStep formula with breathing room: 37 slim keys, the polyphonic step sequencer and arpeggiator, plus chord and strum modes that turn one finger into a progression. CV/gate, MIDI and sync sit alongside USB-C, so it conducts modular, vintage and computer gear from one seat.

It's the sequencing hub for hardware setups that outgrew 32 keys — three octaves is enough for real two-hand sketching, and the chord modes make it a writing tool, not just a transport controller.

If the rig is one synth and a laptop, the standard KeyStep mk2 does the core job for less. The 37 earns its keep when the keyboard is the centre of the table.

Our take
Chord and strum modes are the quiet killer feature — sketching progressions into a modular with one finger gets addictive. Worth the step up from the 32 for writers; unnecessary for pure sequencer duty.
