The DT 990 remade: classic open-back housing, new STELLAR.45 driver at 48 Ω, and a detachable locking mini-XLR cable on a 990 at last. One impedance that behaves from a phone, a laptop and a studio interface alike.

The character survives the transplant — wide stage, lively top — with lower distortion and none of the old amp anxiety. Velour pads and serviceable parts throughout, so it will outlast several computers.

Our take

Between the two modern open Beyerdynamics: the DT 900 PRO X is the flatter mixing tool, this keeps the classic 990 sparkle. Choose by job — mixes: 900 X; pleasure with occasional work: 990 X. Against its own ancestors, the detachable cable alone settles it.
